Craft Cotton Fabric and How to Buy it

Craft Cotton Fabric and How to Buy it

Buying fabric for patchwork is not quite the same as for dressmaking. When your calculations have been done you may find that for some colours and prints you need only a small quantity of cloth. Because of this we sell the fabric in different ways. Our fabrics by length (normally 44 inches or 112cm in width) are priced and sold in multiples of half a metre.

For some projects fat quarters are adequate and to this end we do packs of fat quarter metres in our plain fabrics and also fat quarter collections.

For other smaller pieces there is sufficient fabric in a piece from one of our Stash packs. These are approximately 9” x 10” each. It is always useful to have small pieces of fabric that may just come in handy for a touch of colour here and there.

Lastly we have charm packs and these are approximately 5” squares of different fabrics. They give you a really good variety of different fabrics for a relatively low outlay.

Of course in time you build up your own collection of pieces but this is an excellent way to start you off.

Printed craft cotton fabrics are sometimes fairly short-lived. The idea is to keep the choice available fresh so as new designs come out they replace the previous designs.

With this craft becoming far more popular within the United Kingdom some very exciting developments have occurred and we now as a country design some of our own fabrics. It used to be that all the craft cottons were imported from the United States and everyone had to search for American craft cotton. Much of it still is American craft cotton.

People like Makower and Timeless Treasures now have their own designers who produce very individual and exciting designs. So we have some really British designs mixed with a selection of American designs and it all makes the market far more interesting.
