For hand quilting it is a good idea to use a good quality quilting frame.
This allows you to concentrate on a selected area of the patchwork quilt and have control
of this particular section of the design.
Use mercerised cotton quilting thread such as YLI in either a solid colour or one of the
very attractive variegated designs.
The purpose of quilting is to tie the three layers – the quilt top – the wadding
– and the backing – together to prevent them moving in use. With a needled
cotton wadding the normal quilting distance needed to safely hold a quilt is approximately
10 inch spacing.
This however can develop into an art form in its own right and quilted patterns on the
patchwork quilt greatly enhance the end result.
