For hand quilting it is a good idea to use a good quality quilting frame.
This allows you to concentrate on a selected area of the patchwork quilt and have control
of this particular section of the design.
Use mercerised cotton quilting thread such as YLI in either a solid colour or one of the
very attractive variegated designs.
The purpose of quilting is to tie the three layers the quilt top the wadding
and the backing together to prevent them moving in use. With a needled
cotton wadding the normal quilting distance needed to safely hold a quilt is approximately
10 inch spacing.
This however can develop into an art form in its own right and quilted patterns on the
patchwork quilt greatly enhance the end result.
