Simple Quilting
Quilting can be as simple or complicated as you wish to make it. Once you have completed your patchwork quilt top you need to consider constructing the quilt with wadding and backing.
The purpose of quilting is to hold these three layers together:
The quilt top normally made of patchwork
The wadding or batting to give the quilt some substance
The quilt backing.
How close together the quilting needs to be depends on the type of wadding. On many of the low loft waddings - which have been needled - the quilting can be spaced up to ten inches apart. This can take the form of straight stitching.
A different and interesting way to complete a quilt is to tie the three layers together at intervals. This can be achieved by spacing buttons and fixing through the buttons to give a secure tie to hold the layers together.
