What is Patchwork and Quilting

Patchwork and quilting are the two processes used to make a patchwork quilt.

Firstly comes the patchwork - the joining together of pieces of cotton patchwork fabric in patterns to make the top of the quilt.

This patched quilt top goes on a layer of wadding, which in turn has a backing layer of fabric making the ‘sandwich’ to be quilted. The layers are normally quilted together to secure the wadding and may also provide surface decoration in quilting stitches.
